The fixture is always played in the morning before the ladies final at Wimbledon. And what can be better than a glorious summer day and grass court tennis at one of the finest club’s in the country; 2018 did not disappoint. The Pubs were quicker out of the blocks than SGH in both first round matches winning the sets 7-5, but this did not last and sadly both pairs lost in a champions tie-break (one going to 13-11 – not quite as tense as the Nadal/Djokovic tie-break the night before but certainly close!). The second round of rubbers was split with one of the matches again going to a champions tie-break which the Pubs sneaked home on. This resulted in the final score being 3-1 to St George’s Hill…although with eight Pubs players on show, maybe we should claim a win!
After some excellent tennis, we decamped to the bar for some lunch and to watch the fifth set of Nadal/Djokovic; a fitting end to a fine day. Our thanks go to Chris Jenkins for captaining the St George’s Hill team and making this fixture so enjoyable and we looking forward to 2019.
